Cushing’s syndrome causes excessive cortisol secretion that leads to increases in blood glucose levels.  For reasons that are unclear, some of the extra glucose is deposited as body fat in locations characteristic for this disease, typically in the abdomen, above the shoulder blades, and in the face.  The abnormal fat distrubutions in the latter two locations are descriptively called a “buffalo hump” and a “moon face” (Like Dwight!).
